Taurine supplementation

taurine · 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid

I could not verify the evidence base from live sources in this session: the web search budget was exhausted before any query ran, and direct fetches to PubMed, PMC and the TGA all failed (timeouts and reCAPTCHA blocks). Nothing below should be published without re-verification. On the discovery pass, the headline lifespan claim rests on a 2023 Science paper reporting roughly 10-12% median lifespan extension in mice, with supporting monkey data. That is animal evidence. There is no human randomised trial demonstrating a longevity or healthspan outcome from taurine supplementation that I was able to confirm live, and the human data that do exist address short-term metabolic and exercise markers rather than ageing endpoints. Critically, subsequent analyses have questioned whether blood taurine reliably declines with age in humans at all, which undercuts the deficiency premise; I could not open a source confirming this and flag it only as a known open question to check. Treat this as the weakest item in the set: preclinical evidence, promoted well ahead of it.

Would fall under Singapore's health supplement framework. HSA states that health supplements are not subject to approval or licensing by HSA for importation, manufacture or sale; the dealer carries the obligation to ensure the product is safe, compliant and correctly labelled, with notification to HSA voluntary. Verified from the HSA health supplements overview page. Note: this is the framework-level position; I did not separately verify taurine's specific status against HSA's prohibited or restricted ingredient lists, and that check should be done before publication.

Evidence is not approvalAn evidence grade describes how strong the science is. A regulatory status describes whether a body has approved the intervention for an indication. They are different questions, answered separately above.

What it is

Plain-language explainer

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid found in the diet and synthesised in small amounts by the body, sold widely as an oral supplement. It came to attention in longevity circles after a 2023 report that declining taurine levels track with ageing in animals and that supplementation extended median lifespan in mice. It is claimed to slow biological ageing and improve metabolic, muscular and immune markers.
