Dry flotation therapy

Dry float · Dry float bed · Dry float therapy · Zerobody · Starpool Zerobody · Dry flotation · ZeroGravity flotation

The healthspan case for commercial dry float beds is weak. The underlying idea borrows credibility from dry immersion, a well-studied space-medicine model, but that literature studies dry immersion as a deconditioning analogue for microgravity (fluid shifts, muscle and bone loss) over days, not as a therapeutic 30-minute wellness session, so it does not support the benefit claims made in studios. Consumer-facing claims about detoxification, hormonal balance, cellular repair and anti-ageing have no supporting outcome data and should be treated as marketing. Restorative floatation-REST research in humans is mostly small, short-term, and focused on state anxiety and subjective relaxation rather than any ageing or healthspan endpoint. No claim of an effect on biological ageing, mortality or age-related disease is supported. It is a low-risk comfort and relaxation modality; the honest framing is a pleasant recovery experience, not a longevity intervention. Note: this profile was compiled with live web search unavailable partway through, so the evidence review here is deliberately conservative and no specific trial is cited as confirmed.

Evidence is not approvalAn evidence grade describes how strong the science is. A regulatory status describes whether a body has approved the intervention for an indication. They are different questions, answered separately above.

What it is

Plain-language explainer

Dry flotation therapy uses a bed in which the user lies on a warmed, flexible waterproof membrane suspended over a body of heated water, producing a sensation of near-weightlessness without contact with the water. Commercial units such as Starpool's Zerobody are sold to recovery studios, spas and gyms, typically as 30 to 60 minute sessions. Operators market it for stress reduction, parasympathetic activation, sleep quality, muscle recovery and, less often, "cellular repair" and anti-ageing.
